Zip Pouch tutorial

Zip Pouches!

To make all three pouches you will need 3\4 of a yard of Outer fabric and Lining Fabric.  You will need 1 yard of lightweight fusible interfacing.  Each individual pouch can be made with one fat quarter.  You will need at the longest 12” zippers, the zipper can always be cut down to fit any size pouch.  You can add zipper pulls to your pouch with jewelry findings, pendants, buttons, or beads.  If you wish to decorate your pouch in any way do so before assembling the bag but after you have applied the interfacing to your outer pieces.  It may be helpful to draw your ½” seam allowance on the fabric with chalk to help you keep your decoration from being sewn into your seams.

Large Pouch: 9x11 with pattern piece measuring 10x12

Medium Pouch: 6x5.5 with pattern piece measuring 7x6.5

Little Pouch: 5x3 with pattern piece measuring 6x4

Steps 3 through 5 are optional and will work best on the Large and Medium sized pouch.

1.       Cut 2 of outer fabric, lining fabric and lightweight interfacing

2.       Fuse interfacing to wrong sides of the outer fabric

3.       Cut band of lining fabric 2” by 12” and a strip of interfacing 1” by 12”.  Fuse interfacing to wrong side of band centered leaving half an inch on top and bottom.  For medium pouch cut fabric 2” by 8” and interfacing 1” by 8”

4.       Fold down and press the half inch on top and bottom of band making a 1” band

5.       Pin band to right side of one of the Outer pieces 3.5” from top edge and top stitch band to Outer piece
6.       Pin one Outer piece to zipper with right sides together

7.       Match up one lining piece and pin to zipper with right side of the fabric to wrong side of the zipper

8.       The zipper with be sandwiched between the Outer and Lining fabrics which will now be right sides together with the top of the zipper facing the right side of the Outer Fabric

9.       Sew in zipper with ¼” seam allowance

10.   Repeat steps 6 through 9 with remaining Outer and Lining pieces

11.   Open Zipper halfway!!  Pin around pouch matching right sides of Outer fabric together and right sides of Lining Fabric together.  Pin zipper teeth folded down towards the lining fabric.

12.   Sew all the way around pouch, going over zipper on both sides, leaving a 3” opening in bottom of lining.  Use ½” seam allowance.

13.   Clip all 4 corners.

14.   Turn pouch through opening in the lining.

15.   Fold edges of the opening in the lining inward and sew opening closed.

16.   Tuck lining into the pouch.
